My
name is Sister Clare Lewis and I am a member of the Poor Clare
Contemplative Community located on Vancouver Island in the small town
of Duncan, in British Columbia, Canada
To
give you some idea of who I am, I will share briefly something of my
background, early life, and unfolding years, that have all shaped me
and brought me to this present moment in the year of the Lord, 2009.
My
Grandfather, John Richard Lewis, was born in Wales, and my
Grandmother was the daughter of an African slave who was captured,
bound, and brought on a slave ship to Jamaica to work on one of the
large sugar-cane Estates under unimaginable hardships and suffering.
After
some years, my Grandfather was sent to Jamaica to be the commanding
Officer in charge of the military camp in Kingston. In time, he met,
fell in love, and married my Grandmother, Clara, and brought her to
live with him in the Camp.
They
had ten children, of whom my father, Jackie, was the oldest. He
married my mother, Laura, of French descent, and they had five
children of whom I am the youngest. Since my father had inherited his
mother's strong Catholic faith, this was imparted to each of us,
his children. From Kindergarten to whatever higher education we
received, it was always in Catholic Schools and Colleges.
